China Mojo: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. What is the CHINA MOJO course about?
A. Our China Mojo fall 2011 course will focus on the Great Wall of China and its history, architecture, and cultural and symbolic significance. Students will engage in research about the Great Wall, and produce multimedia mobile journalism projects documenting their emerging understanding of the Great Wall as a global “building” of significance. Our trip to China will see us exploring some of the key landmarks along the Great Wall over the course of eight days.
Q. How do I take CHINA MOJO for 3 credit hours as a course?
A. You can take CHINA MOJO for 3 course credits as: 1) a junior seeking to satisfy your CORE 330 course credit; 2) A professional writing major seeking to satisfy a professional writing elective; 3) A CCM major in any CCM division program seeking to satisfy a free CCM elective. As a CCM student, you may also obtain permission from your program director to receive program elective credit for taking and passing the CHINA MOJO course.
NOTE: You MUST speak with Dr. Williams re: the course and the trip before you are granted permission to register for the course. We just want to make sure you have a clear understanding of the course and trip expectations.
Q. What days and times does the CHINA MOJO course meet during the fall 2011 semester?
A. We will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays prior to our November Thanksgiving week trip, and twice after we return.
Q. If I take the CHINA MOJO course, do I have to go on the trip to China?
A. Yes. The ten day China trip is a MANDATORY part of the CHINA MOJO course. You cannot pass the course without going on the trip (which will be a fun and epic adventure, and the climax of our CHINA MOJO study.)
Q. How much will the CHINA MOJO trip (Friday, November 18 through Sunday, November 27) cost me?
A. The ten-day trip will cost approximately $2,800.00, including our round-trip airfare from New England to Beijing, internal flights and train tickets, a per diem for all meals and lodging, and other travel-related expenses.
Q. Do you have some ideas for helping students raise money for the CHINA MOJO trip?
A. Yes, and we will discuss these ideas at our very first organizational meeting in late spring.
Q. What will we do in the course after we return from China?
A. After our trip, we will focus our efforts on publishing a multimedia travelogue of our adventures and experiences studying and visiting China.
